SOUTHERN COMFORT, SAVANNAH STYLE…

Bebe Fitzpatrick’s hard upbringing taught her how to take care of herself, how to tell true friends from false, and how to be a good cop. She can also sweet-talk a man like she means it…until she stumbles into the arms of a damn sexy Yankee who’s gunning for Savannah ’s favorite shady entrepreneur…

As far as Donovan McCabe is concerned, the main obstacle to his investigation is the one thing he can’t help wanting in his way. Bebe’s smart, sassy, and utterly oblivious to her own appeal. Add the fact that a Boston cop trying to arrest one of Savannah ’s best-loved citizens is about as popular as the reincarnation of General Grant. What Donovan needs is a better game plan. What he’s about to get is southern “hospitality” that’ll make his toes curl…

“Don’t you dare go feeling sorry for me because, Donovan McCabe, I sure as hell don’t need a pity party and now you want to tell me what you’re doing on my front stoop?”

Her gaze met his and she braced herself for the Oh, you poor thing look but instead Donovan bent his head and kissed her. She started to protest but her lips were busy and suddenly her tongue was too and then her arms got into the act and then her insides melted into goo which had acid beat all to hell and back. This was all wrong on every level except one…Donovan McCabe felt so darn good when she was feeling crappy as hell.

How many times had Dara struck and no one had been there? But here and now on this beautiful spring morning, there was Donovan McCabe. She breathed, a sense of peace she’d never known before in her whole life filling her up like a glass long empty. She leaned into him and took one more kiss, just a little with a tiny nibble of his bottom lip to chase away the lingering chill of Dara, then Bebe stepped back. Every cell in her body…except the two rational cells still functioning in her brain… insisted she was the most stupid woman on planet earth for not staying locked in his arms.

“What was that all about?” The question was as much for her as him because she didn’t know what to think about the effect he had on her.

“You look like a woman who needed a hug and the kiss part just snuck in.” His voice was steady but there was unsure spark in his eyes that said he didn’t just go around kissing every woman who may have the need. But she didn’t need him to be nice and she wished like hell he hadn’t seen Dara. It was Bebe’s private life, the part she kept tucked away as best she could even from Brie, Priss and Charlotte . A crappy childhood did not transfer into a crappy life. “Are you playing me, McCabe? Softening me up so I’ll help you nail Cleveland ? Well, I won’t and I can handle Dara.”

“How about I look the other way and you just shoot her.”

Bebe broke into a laugh and today she didn’t think she’d be laughing about anything. “I’ll lend you my gun,” he continued, looking perfectly serious. “Or at least blast the bitch verbally. I’ve seen you in action, you’re a hellcat when riled. Why not now?”

If he hadn’t offered his gun she would have told Donovan to butt out but he did offer and he’d kissed her when she needed it and she wasn’t in the habit of needing much. A new meaning of good cop, bad cop. “A conditioned response from when I was a kid. Dara’s favorite game was to threaten to leave me in the marsh if I didn’t do what she said. Scared the hell out of me and you never did say way you’re here.” Why the hell was she telling McCabe all this? Fallout from a dynamite kiss.

“When my mother tells me to stand up straight and get a haircut I still do it.”

A gentle smile that comes from thinking of good stuff softened his face.

“Except my mom’s nothing like yours, though I do remember threats of military school.” He leaned against the side of the apartment looking as if the place belonged to him. He was that kind of guy, one who fit in anywhere, probably even military school. Bebe felt as if she fit in nowhere and she’d lived in Savannah all her life. He said, “I’m here because I didn’t want to air our problems in front of the whole station. We need to talk about how we’re going to handle Ray Cleveland.”

This was better. Arguing over work was a piece of cake, reminiscing about a screwed up childhood was a piece of shit. “I said I’m not helping you with Cleveland, McCabe and I haven’t changed my mind so there’s no need for kisses that curl my toes.” Well damn. She was on a roll till the toes part. When Donovan was around she had to learn to think before she opened her big mouth…which could lead to more kissing and then tongues. What in the almighty hell was she going to do with Donovan McCabe!

During their twenty two year marriage, they lived in Zambia and London, where she became a well-known figure on the social scene, and had a brief and successful modelling career at the unusual age of 28. Fedele is their only child. After their divorce, Riccardo married Ivana Trump in 1995, though the marriage was short lived. Stella now lives in Athens where she brings up her grand-daughter Katerina. As well as being involved in the property and renovation business, which ensures she maintains connections with London, she is also a tireless campaigner for the better understanding of schizophrenia and mental illness. Silk Flowers Never Die is her first book.

Silk Flowers Never Die is an important and intensely personal memoir, powerfully showing with humanity and humor, the difficulties that exist for any family trying to cope with schizophrenia and mental distress. In a compelling story that reveals how much stranger than fiction fact is, Stella Mazzucchelli describes her determination to preserve her son from the worst effects of mental illness, while his young wife is dying of cancer.

In the process of trying to rise to these challenges, Stella is transformed from a beautiful, over-protected Society woman with alcohol issues, to an impressive, courageous earth-mother who now campaigns to reduce the stigma attached to mental illness by using her privileged position to positive effect. This moving book is informative on a host of subjects, ranging from the lifestyle of the International Super-Rich to the profundities of facing terminal illness and mental disease. Due to its intelligence, insight, and compassion the appeal of this amazing story and struggle should be universal.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT SILK FLOWERS NEVER DIE!

Bob Brooker and Kaye O’Dougherty have been adventuring together for a lot of years now. They first met at a recording studio on 42nd Street. Yes, that 42nd Street. They recorded a commercial for E.J. Korvette’s, who went out of business soon thereafter.

Bob is an old saloon singer who, as Bobby Brookes, recorded for Victor and Capital back in the day. Kaye has trouble carrying a tune in a bucket. Nevertheless, over the years, as Brooker and O’Dougherty, the two have collaborated on a variety of theater projects, performing, writing, directing, managing, and producing. In keeping with the changing times, they have even created a cyber alter-ego named eBobb.

Recently, Bob and Kaye both took long-overdue turns at being rather mature college kids. Kaye now holds a Bachelors Degree in the Humanities from St. Peter’s College in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Bob was graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State University with a BA in Theater, and is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

You can visit their website by going to FootballisforLovers.com or their blog by clicking here.

Can learning about football be sexy? According to Football is for Lovers, when it comes to your love life, football can be better than oysters.

The good news is that Football is for Lovers makes the basics so . . . well, so basic that learning the game is easy as eating an ice cream cone. And just as much fun.

With anecdotes, illustrations, and a lot of laughs, Football is for Lovers not only makes it easy to understand the game, but also shows you how to put an end to the TV clicker wars, improve your relationship, and spice up your love life.

It just takes looking at the game of football a little bit differently.

Then again, since Football is for Lovers contains references to football great Jerry Rice in a pink tutu, images of paintings by French artist Jean Dubuffet, an alert about the dangers of speaking Northeastern Mandarin, an explanation of the value of M & M’s in a relationship, and a Burma Shave sign, to say it looks at football “a little bit differently” may be something of an understatement.

But if your football-obsessed partner has been making you a ‘football widow’ from August NFL pre-season through the February Super-Bowl, thus convincing you that you hate football, this little book may be just the ‘different look’ you need to discover that, after all, Football really is for Lovers!

A little splattering of some words of wisdom from the first few chapters ofFootball is for Lovers:

From the Introduction
. . . before we launch into the ‘why-you-should-learn-the-game-of-football’ pitch, those of you who are already motivated, have more torridity in your lovelife than you can handle, are blessed with mirth-laden relationships, and have only gotten (or been given) Football is for Lovers so that you could understand the game of football, feel free to jump on down to Chapter V, Football Pre-101 (the really basic basics).

From Chapter I
In this chapter, we will begin to explore the underlying reasons for your aversion to football. Well, other than that your lover completely ignores you during the game, spills beer on the rug when his team does something great, completely ignores you during the game, spills beer on the rug when his team does something awful, and completely ignores you during the game.

From Chapter II
. . . now that we’ve established what’s in it for you, the next question is: how do you go about getting it?

Well, it seems to us, while halfway decent sex may be available to most of the people most of the time, great sex goes deeper than that. We’d say no pun intended, but what the heck.

From Chapter III
Ah, yes. The delicious implications of that lascivious question: what are you wearing tonight? You know it’s coming, and you’re already tantalized by the possibilities.

You check the TV guide to see who’s playing. If you’re lucky, it will be the Oakland Raiders. They have these really hot basic black uniforms. And you know how good you look in basic black.

From Chapter IV
. . . if you drag your prejudices to the game, the result will be similar to dragging your lover to a Dubuffet exhibition. That is, you will not get the candy. Nor will you get the candy by faking it. When you ask what inning it is, people know.

From Chapter V
If the guy who is about to catch the ball notices that the opposition is close enough to hurt him as soon as he does, he’s allowed to signal for what’s known as a ‘fair catch.’ That is, the other guys are not allowed to hit him, and the next play will start at the point where he wussed out . . . er, called for the fair catch.

From Chapter VI
. . . it’s really a matter of logic: big guys in front (they’re called linemen . . . as in guys on the line of scrimmage); smaller (also fast and quick) guys behind them (called backs . . . as in guys in back of the linemen in front). Geez! Could this stuff get any easier? Dew Drop Inn.

Review
I really enjoyed reading through this Bible study. If you’re wanting to get to know more about women who have surrendered to God’s will and changed the world, this is an excellent study. Each chapter is about a different influential woman who, through God’s power, quietly influenced change in the world. The book covers the lives of Deborah, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Monica, Sarah Edwards, Lottie Moon, Shirley Lindsay. Each chapter starts with a ‘Culture and Background’ section to give the reader a short history. There are ‘Consider This’ sections interspersed throughout each chapter which will give you questions to think about or journal about. Each chapter is fairly short, so this study is excellentfor those of us who have limited time. This would be a perfect study for a busy mom’s group! This is an excellent study, whether using it with a group or personally. Hopefully, it will inspire you to be a quiet influence of your own and make a change in the world!

Add to Technorati Favorites

I’ve held off in my thoughts on the BBAW awards partly because I wanted to get my motives for doing so clear in my mind. I also wanted to step back and look at the entire event objectively and make sure it wasn’t just sour grapes on my part. At this point I can honestly say that’s not the case.

I had a problem with how the BBAW awards were done. Some blogs had lots of time to get in their posts for judging while others barely had 24 hours to pull them. It was also not really clear what judges were looking for. The judging was very subjective and even though there were guidelines, it still fell under each judges personal opinion. It also seemed like the judges were part of a small clique of bloggers.

Was I upset I wasn’t one of them…not really. My schedule is pretty full and I’m not sure I’d have had the time to give it. Although I did offer to help more than once and was seemingly ignored.

It also wasn’t clear what were categories and what were just awards. It said you could only be shortlisted in one category…

I know that a lot of people were completely offended by the idea that someone would self nominate themselves. HELLO! Blogs were allowed to self nom so nobody should get high and mighty about that. It was also a way for lesser known blogs to maybe get themselves in the mix a bit. Unless it’s in the rules that you can’t…nobody should get upset when people do.

If you want to really divide things up…

commercial book blogs vs personal blogs

Publisher hosted giveaways vs. personal giveaways

self hosted blogs vs hosted blogs

You all get the idea. While it sounds picky…all of us know these things do make a difference in the blog.

This wasn’t about who the blogging community clearly thought was the best, but WHO we were allowed to vote on was chosen by a select few. Why not take the top ten people who were nom’d and let us vote between them – that would have made an issue of ‘the people’s choice’.

I think anytime you have a group of people who ‘select’ who is worthy of being voted on, you lose something.

I found this quote by the founder of the event on the listing of winners:

“I want to sincerely thank everyone who voted my blog as most Altruistic Blog. I considered declining this award, but someone on the Awards Committee reminded me that the community has spoken.” My Friend Amy

Now don’t get me wrong, I like Amy and she has a nice blog. BUT if she really didn’t want to be considered for winning why send in her posts? Why not pull her blog BEFORE the shortlist came out?

In my experience, when you plan an event like this, you take yourself out of the running for prizes. If you’re judging, you take yourself out of the running. Right or wrong, it creates an atmostphere that is clique free.

I’ve found some wonderful new blogs to follow from BBAW and for that I’m very grateful. I’m working on getting everyone added to my reader so I can keep up with them. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for people to be introduced to the new people on the block.

I also think that a lot of revamping needs to be done, rules made clearer, etc. for next year. This is a great idea and a great way to bring bloggers together, but this year there were definitely some moments when it seemed like it was about to self destruct.

If it were me (control issues I know

I’d open up the noms in August and leave them open for a month…let everyone campaign and get their friends out there voting for them.

Then – pick the top vote getting blogs in each category( Possibly 10 of them) …and have final voting the week before BBAW.

I don’t think the problems were a reflection on Amy – this was a huge undertaking last year, that just exploded this year, and when an event gets that big that fast there will be growing pains.

Congrats to Amy for her awards ( well earned) and congratulations on surviving another year of BBAW!

Many of us are experiencing it now. As we have seen in recent years, evil is real in our world, present and close to each one of us.

In such difficult times, suffering and evil beg questions about God–Why would an all-good and all-powerful God create a world full of evil and suffering? And then, how can there be a God if suffering and evil exist?

These are ancient questions, but also modern ones as well. Atheists such as Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and even former believers like Bart Ehrman answer the question simply: The existence of suffering and evil proves there is no God.

In this captivating new book, best-selling author Randy Alcorn challenges the logic of disbelief, and brings a fresh, realistic, and thoroughly biblical insight to the issues these important questions raise.

Alcorn offers insights from his conversations with men and women whose lives have been torn apart by suffering, and yet whose faith in God burns brighter than ever. He reveals the big picture of who God is and what God is doing in the world–now and forever. And he equips you to share your faith more clearly and genuinely in this world of pain and fear.

As he did in his best-selling book, Heaven, Randy Alcorn delves deep into a profound subject, and through compelling stories, provocative questions and answers, and keen biblical understanding, he brings assurance and hope to all.

Find Your Balance in an Out of Balance World helps you recognize it’s impact on you and sorts out all of the gobbledy gook of today’s lifestyle rules. Rather than provide you with a new complicated theory or life’s commandments, Lifestyle Coach, Barbara Tessari’s reader friendly guide helps you explore underlying issues like bad habits, blinders, taste adaptation, selflessness, stress or addiction to diets and guides you back to common sense balanced living sprinkled with a few of Grandma’s rules. Better informed and with a changed mindset, you can easily design your own plan to a healthier, more balanced life – and, it’s easier than you think!

      About the Author
Barbara Tessari is passionate about helping people improve the quality of their life. Her inspiration came after overcoming her own battles with her unhealthy behaviors and the revelation that taking care of her personal self positively impacted every aspect of her life. Barbara is a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist, Personal Trainer, Certified Wellness Coach, Motivational Speaker and Author. In 2002 she wrote the book, The Pizza and Ice Cream Diet, revealing the myths lies and deceptions of the food and diet industry. Barbara spreads her message with a wide range of Lifestyle speaking topics and offers entertaining Cooking Shows on preparing economical, healthier meals in 20 minutes or less. She is also a Workplace Wellness Consultant and speaks to corporate executives on the benefits of promoting health and well-being as part of their corporate culture to reduce health care costs and improve productivity.

Review

In this book, Barbara focuses on basics like calories in vs. calories out, basic nutrition, and making the decision to be more physically active. She reminds of things like “Grandma’s Rules” which were Eat three square meals a day, no dessert unless you finish dinner, eat all your veggies, don’t spoil your dinner, go out and play, etc.

Basically, rather than throwing some new wonder diet at you or promoting the newest ‘silver bullet’ that will create a new you, Barbara takes us back to common sense and good nutrition. In other words, common sense. Years ago when these rules were the norm, obesity wasn’t the epidemic it is today. She demonstrates to the reader that diet and exercise have gotten so complicated and confusing that people just don’t do them.

I liked this book from the standpoint that it was simple and cut through all the information that we receive constantly from the media on the do’s and don’ts. Most of the information we receive on a daily basis is very biased and often is contradictory.

This book is easy to read and is easy to understand. Barbara takes us back to the basics and good old fashioned common sense. This is a great book!

She is running away from a dreaded marriage to her fish-lipped cousin, while Sir Richard himself is contemplating a loveless marriage with a woman his friends have compared to a cold poultice. Sir Richard can’t allow her to careen about the countryside unchaperoned, even in the guise of a boy, so he pretends to be her tutor and takes her on a fine adventure. When their stagecoach overturns, they find themselves embroiled with thieves, at the center of a murder investigation, and finally, in love.

Review

Sourcebooks Casablanca, who was kind enough to send me this copy to review, is bringing back classic Heyer novels in affordable paperback editions. Heyer wrote over fifty novels, including her wonderful Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction.

This book was such a treat to read. I originally went through my Heyer phase in about junior high, so it was fun to go back and re-read it as an adult. It didn’t lose anything in the ‘translation’ from young girl to adult and I think it’s great that Sourcebooks is bringing them back!
Review
This is a wonderful little daily devotional for young children. With gorgeous colorful illustrations and questions that can provoke learning conversations with your children, this book is a wonderful addition to your child’s library.

I absolutely adore this little book, which incidentally is small and chunky, the perfect size for little hands.

Your kids are going to love this book. My copy is reserved for my first granddaughter who is due in late November. It’s never too early to start reading them God’s Promises.
